„Tourism: From ‚all inclusive’ to inclusive for all”
8th December, 2003, 7- 9 p.m., Stephansstift, Hanover

as part of the seminar „Tourism: Unfair Practices – Equitable Options“ organised by DANTE – The Network for Sustainable Tourism Development

Since the UN Social Summit in Copenhagen (1995) and the UN-Millenium Declaration, poverty alleviation has been widely recognised by the international community as one of the major challenges in the twenty-first century. It has also been taken up by tourism leaders in recent reports. They emphasise "the fundamental role of tourism as a positive instrument towards the reduction of poverty, the creation of job opportunities as well as contributing to social harmony” (WTO news October 2003) and present new programmes. What are their strategies and measures proposed? How can tourism leaders effectively contribute to fair decision-making processes and benefit-sharing in tourism and to sustainable livelihoods of local communities, enabling them to live their lives in dignity?
